Mining industry injects $23.6 billion into NSW economy

Sat, February 24, 2024

We all know our world class miners contribute an enormous amount to local communities and to the NSW economy. Exactly how much is highlighted every year when we release our annual Economic Impact Survey.

Our latest Survey found In the last financial year, participating mining companies supported over 31,500 full time equivalent jobs, the highest reported in a decade.

The survey also found mining companies directly injected $23.6 billion into the NSW economy over the same period, an increase of $6.9 billion compared to the previous year, and again the highest level in a decade.

This record spending included over $14 billion on goods and services from almost 7,000 NSW businesses.

Mining is able to do so much of the heavy lifting to support NSW because of the people who work within our industry. In this regard, we’ll be recognising some of the amazing achievements of women in our workforce at our annual NSW Women in Mining Awards to be held in March.

From technology and innovation to engineering and trades, as well as operational roles and in mining supplier businesses, our award winners will highlight opportunities for women in mining, and showcase the career paths available.

Winners of the NSW Awards go on to represent our state at the Women in Resources National Awards. Last year, finalists from NSW won two of the national award categories – the Exceptional Woman in Australian Resources Award and the Inclusion and Diversity Champion in Australian Resources Award.

The Women in Mining Awards are just one of the ways in which our industry will continue to highlight our world-class mining industry in 2024 and the massive contribution our hardworking mining workforce makes to NSW.
